Adoptions FAQ » Cat Adopt » Tarred Kitten Goes To New Home, Kitten Named 'Angel'

Question:

I stand by my opinion that the odds are this cat will have to be rehomed again at some point in the future, and the shelters I help at would never have chosen this home for her for that reason. A person of that age would not be refused a cat, they’d be given one of older years.

I hope its not a kill shelter you work at. And since when did a person’s age make it not acceptable for them to get a kitten? Who do you think you are to deny them that choice? You do realize people can die at any age don’t you and 70 isn’t all that old. My parents are in their 70’s, travel alot and just bought a new home. My grandmother is 92 and up until 6 months ago lived in her own home, she just moved into an assisted living complex and even though her meals are provided still cooks and bakes all the time. If a senior citizen wants to have a kitten they can find one easily enough in the newspaper and then can get free food and vet care for the cats life after they sue your butt for age discrimination. Sounds discriminatory to me.  Why should seniors be denied the sharing of affections with a companion animal?   Should I, now at age 52, look to surrender my young felines, because there is the possibility I’ll die before them.  My lass, there is always a possibility, no matter the age, no matter the source, be it from bullet, cancer, or coronary, that I’ll leave this earth ahead of my furries.  I can just as much control the length of my life as command the sun to stop shining. As for this kitten, I’d say I’m a realist. Who do you think you are to deny them that choice?

It’s not my choice, it’s the shelter policy but yes I do agree with it. Elderly people are not denied a cat, they are offered adult cats instead. Get over it.

So? No, not all seniors are geriatric or ill, but the chances of a 70 year old living another 15 years are by definition not as high as those for a 40 or 50 or 20 year old. It is therefore a factor in the decision. If a senior citizen wants to have a kitten they can find one easily enough in the newspaper and then can get free food and vet care for the cats life after they sue your butt for age discrimination.

If elderly people choose to get cats from free ads, fine, we can’t stop them and it’s not our responsibility. But for those cats we are responsible for, we make rules we think are best for the *cats*. Pray do tell where all these elderly litigants are going to get free food and vet care from? There is no law against age discrimination in the UK at present, we are not as litigious a society as you anyway, and finally, in the UK you have no legal right to own a pet. So they wouldn’t get a penny off us. Hope this settles things for you because unlike others I’m not going to be dragged into your endless, tedious arguments. Although hundreds of people wanted to raise Yoda, as she was called by shelter employees, Mary Meredith, 70, was selected to adopt the

still-scarred feline, – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – whom she plans to re-name Angel. "Because I think angels were with her … that’s why she’s here," she said.  Although Meredith has four other cats, she said that she didn’t hestitate in taking in another. "When I saw this cat on TV, something went through my heart," she said. "I had to have this baby." Authorities are still offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information about who covered the kitten with tar.

Let’s hope that the shelter took that into consideration, and that provisions have already been made for the kitten in the event of her owner’s death. We should all be doing the exact same thing (making arrangements for the care of our pets in the event of our untimely deaths).  You don’t have to be 70 years old to die and leave your pets homeless and at the mercy of whatever shelter they get dumped at.

JMO. <dons asbestos undies ‘Tain’t necessarily so. I know a woman who is 80 years old and is not only is she still working full-time – and by that I mean 12 hour days – as a high-powered business executive in NYC, she works out at the gym [and I mean *works out*] nearly every day, and that includes weekends. She’s also got a pretty active love life and loves to go tango dancing!  And then there was Katharine Graham, who was killed in an accident recently while on a business trip: she was still running the Washington Post at the age of 84. And, now that I think of it, I know a 94 year old woman – graduated Radcliffe College in 1929, *more* than 70 years ago – who is still working. For God’s sake, Theodore Roosevelt was her godfather!  And my grandmother lived to be 101, and she walked a mile every day until the end of her life. Keeping active mentally and physically and being in touch with people helps keep you young, I believe. And so-called ‘old age’ just doesn’t mean what it used to any more, especially for women, who tend to live longer than men anyway. You may remove your undies now. Oh really? Do please give examples of my "negativity". IIRC, you’re the one who favours the death penalty, I’d say you can’t get more negative in your outlook than that. As for this kitten, I’d say I’m a realist. As somebody who works for a charity which takes in the pets of elderly people who have died, I stand by my opinion that the odds are this cat will have to be rehomed again at some point in the future, and the shelters I help at would never have chosen this home for her for that reason. your memory’s getting rusty, Michelle, must be all those declawing threads you’re engrossed in. I’m in UK where kill shelters are virtually unheard of, and no, I don’t work for one of the kill shelters. And since when did a person’s age make it not acceptable for them to get a kitten? Who do you think you are to deny them that choice?

It’s not my choice, it’s the shelter policy but yes I do agree with it. Elderly people are not denied a cat, they are offered adult cats instead. Get over it.
